Rescued from the Food World verandah in Bangaluru along with her younger brother Hari, Dhana Lakshmi now goes to school and she is the best singer and the best dancer, and is also among the top ranking students of her school. Her brother also performs exceptionally well in academics and extracurricular activities. They were living on the streets. They didn’t want to go back to their family. Their parents would often beat them up to beg and bring money home. 8 years ago we brought them to our home, groomed them, fed them and gave them a loving environment which every child needs.

Our struggle didn’t just end by bringing these 2 kids home and bathing them and feeding them well. Years of begging habit wouldn’t leave them. They would simply run outside and start begging instinctively. Constant supervision was needed. It took 5 years of relentless effort to wean them away and get them integrated into a normal life routine.

This is just a single story out of somewhat similar stories of around 500 children that we have rescued so far. It is has been a tough but an extremely incredible journey of learning, unlearning, re-learning. Every child we rescued had a different story, a different past and the approach we had to take to deal with every kid would vary depending on, in what state we rescued them.  When we see these kids happy and performing well at academics, all the struggles and efforts seem worth it.

Our NGO, Greater Hope International India®, provides holistic rehabilitation for street children, for poor children, and for children who beg on the roads. We provide them a loving environment. We make sure that they go to school, live in a healthy and loving atmosphere, regularly get nutritional food and above all, develop a positive perspective about the world so that they can grow up as educated, motivated and good citizens.

We have rescued 500 children and the number is rapidly rising. Taking good care of kids requires resources. Generous contribution has been coming from concerned citizens and organizations. But our biggest challenge is providing healthy nutritious meal on a daily basis. It is a huge struggle. There are times when we have shortage of provisions for the next day.

Our other expenditure involves clothing, school fees, shelter and care, recreation, staff, transport, amenities, study materials and health checkups on a regular basis. We keep all our records transparent.
